As North Georgia's temperatures drop, you're more likely to suffer from frozen pipes and flooding inside your home. There are, however, some simple and cost-effective ways to keep your home dry and with running water.
Keep the heat on!
Whenever you plan to be away for a long period of time, you should turn on the heating. When you are not home, it is not necessary to keep the thermostat as high as you would if you were home, but it's ideal to keep it above 55 degrees. Keeping it above this temperature will prevent any water in your home from freezing.
Keep your garage door closed!
Keep your garage door closed is especially critical if your garage has water lines. The garage can get very cold in winter and allowing the cold air in will only make the chances of a frozen pipe burst higher.
Allow the water to drip from a faucet!
Allowing the faucet to drip will prevent any pressure build-up that could lead to pipes bursting. It is a good idea to slightly open both taps if a faucet provides hot and cold water. This is a great tip if you are expecting extremely cold temperatures, a drastic temperature change, or if you will be away from home for a long period of time.
Add extra insulation!
Occasionally, pipes in basements, attics, and crawlspaces need additional insulation to keep them from freezing. It is possible to increase temperature and prevent freezing by using foam rubber or fiberglass sleeves for your pipes.
Keep bathroom and kitchen cabinet doors open!
Under the sink or in cabinets, you can often find pipes. You can open cabinet doors when temperatures start to drop to allow heat from the rest of the house to warm the pipes. Particularly if you anticipate extremely cold temperatures, a drastic change in the weather, or if you are going to be away from home for a long period of time.
Seal up any holes or cracks!
Ensure that any openings where pipes reach the floor and where cold air seeps in are sealed. Seal all cracks and gaps in your home from the outside and the inside in order to ensure an effective seal that will keep it warm in cold weather but prevent it from freezing.
